Origin of Rugs

The world of carpets and rugs is a vast and complicated one. The art of weaving rugs and carpets though originated in the ancient kingdoms of Tibet and Persia respectively there has been tremendous popularity of this concept of floor covering across the countries of the world. The comfort and decorative quality of rugs have encouraged its production across many countries of the world like India, Pakistan, Turkey, Spain, England, and France.

Rug Types

The basic variation of rug types lies in the different aspects of their making. It is however noteworthy that each country or region that has earned a name in the making of rugs have left their own mark in some of the aspects of making rugs. These may vary in the fabrics, weave, style and design of the rugs.

  • Rugs by Fabric – Rugs are mainly categorized by the fabric of their make. Natural fibers like wool, cotton, silk, linen, jute, bamboo and sisal are more in demand. The properties of natural fibers are such that they provide comfort and durability along with the promise of good health. However there are also rugs that are manufactured out of synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon and polypropylene.
  • Weave – Rugs are often known by the knots the number of knots that they have in them. Knots are put in the weaves of the yarns of fibers and are found in numbers within each square feet of the total length of the fabric. Interestingly enough there are even several traditional styles of placing knots in different places of their production. It is also the process of weave that determines the quality of the rug. There are rugs that are handmade and then there are the ones that are machine made.
  • Style and Design – This is an important aspect of rug types. Rugs are often categorized by the different kinds of styles and designs that they are made up of. There are traditional rugs and then there are modern and contemporary rugs. There are finer nuances in each of these categories that lead to further categories as well.

Famous Rug Types

There are some rugs that have traditionally earned a name for their making and a rightful place among the famous rugs in the world. Here are some of the most well known rug types of the world that are known by their names more that serve as a brand name of assurance and quality.

  • Tibetan Rugs –This is the first type of rug that was woven in the world. It was the ancient craft of the Tibetan people that made rugs in wool. The appreciation for this rug type was such that it was soon adopted by the rest of the world as well as developed further in its weave and style.
  • Persian Rugs – This is a famous rug type with several further variations in its making. Persia was well known in the ancient world as the center of the craft of carpet and rug weaving and its style continues to dominate the choice of people.
  • Caucasian Rugs – These all wool rugs from the regions of Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Azerbaijan. There are various tribes involved in the making of the rugs and are also known to use their indigenous production of dyes and colors in the weaves of these rugs.
  • Indian Sub-continental Rugs – The advance of several cultures into the Indian subcontinent also brought about the tradition of weaving rugs. Soon this craft developed new styles new levels of superiority in various places of present day India and Pakistan.
